Who is Rekhu

The one who knows the trade.

Rekhu is named after a word that is about five thousand years old. In ancient Egyptian, rḫ, spoken rekh, means to know, to learn, to be skilled at. That is what we build: an agent that learns a trade from the work itself, and then knows it.

The word

rḫ, to know

Scribes wrote rekh with two signs: the mouth, for r, and a round sign, for kh. Both are in our mark: the mouth as the eye of the cartouche, the round kh with its lines below it. Knowing, in Egyptian, was something you did: you learned it, you were skilled at it.

The people

Rekh-khet, one who knows things

A learned person was a rekh-khet: someone who knows things. Knowing was earned, not inherited. Scribes and craftsmen learned their trade by doing it beside a master, wrote it down, and passed it on, so the next one started from what was known.

The record

Rekhmire's walls

Rekhmire was vizier of Egypt around 1450 BC. His tomb at Thebes is covered with workshops: sculptors, carpenters, metalworkers, brickmakers, each at their craft, next to a written account of the vizier's own duties. A wall-sized record of how every trade was done.

The mark

A name inside a ring, so it lasts.

The cartouche grew out of the shen, a loop of rope tied at the bottom: the sign for what lasts and what is protected. Egyptians wrote a name inside it so it would not be lost. Our mark holds the two signs of rekh in that ring. The ring is everything Rekhu has learned, held together; the line at the bottom is the tie, the ground the knowledge stands on; the spark on the rim is the moment something new is learned.

What it means for the work

Rekhu learns a trade from the work, and then knows it.

Every page built, every bug fixed and every quote calculated adds to what Rekhu knows about that trade, without keeping your content as such. Like Rekhmire's walls, it keeps the record, so the next job starts from knowledge instead of from nothing.

Who builds it

A product of Charisma Design

Rekhu is a trade name and product of Charisma Design, a design and software company in Wormerveer, the Netherlands, that builds websites and software for its clients. Rekhu grew out of that work: the jobs we did by hand for every client, taught to an agent that does them with the developer.
